How Bad Habits Can Affect Your Health

bwellfit | 30 August, 2010 06:18

“Stop biting your finger nails!” “Don’t sit too close to the TV!” “Don’t make that face unless you want it to get stuck that way!”

As children we all remember hearing our parents and grandparents command us to stop doing this, and start doing that.  As kids, we were annoyed. But looking back now, aren’t you grateful to get rid of those bad habits? It’s easy when you have a mom or dad telling you what to do, but as adults we have to be our own voice in our heads telling ourselves “sit up straight!” or  “only one cup of soda is enough!”

Bad habits are hard to kick, but that just means they are all the more important for us to vanish from our lives.

Here are some common bad habits to kick, and the best way to kick them! (More)

Your days are busy rushing off to work, running errands, and chauffeuring the kids around, before you know if you haven't eaten all day. Starving and feeling sluggish, you pull into the nearest drive-thru to order a double cheeseburger, which is convenient but also high in fat, cholesterol and just plain bad for you! Eating healthy can be quite challenging when you are extremely busy, making it nearly impossible to consume all of the proper nutrients that your body needs. Here are 5 healthy snacks that are quick grabs loaded with protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals that will help give you that sustainable boost of energy you need to get through your day. More

There are many different styles and types of massages. Detecting which one you think will work best for you is important. Here are some massages best for certain pains or areas on the body. (More)

Mind Your Eating to Lose Weight and Live Healthier

bwellfit | 25 August, 2010 18:36

Far too often, we overeat and snack for the wrong reasons. We adopt poor eating habits that are tough to break and indulge in mindless food activities such as snacking while watching T.V, emotional eating, and grabbing unhealthy food while on the go. Why do we do this to ourselves? When we are not paying attention, eating poorly becomes second nature. Inevitably, these poor choices will lead to weight gain.

Mindfulness means “pure awareness” and being attentive to what we are eating at all times. Ask yourself, “Am I eating because I am hungry or bored?” Understanding the “why” and knowing the consequences that come along with being inattentive towards food is important to our mental and physical health. In order to change the way we approach eating and mealtimes, we must understand that the human body needs food for fuel and nourishment, not to ease our emotional pain. More

Stretch to Relieve Stress

bwellfit | 03 August, 2010 12:10

With so much going on in life, whether it’s work obligations, supporting family, and traveling, it’s not long before you are stressed out and overwhelmed. The issue at hand is that it becomes more difficult to find time to slow down, breath and appreciate the moment. Before you know it, another hectic week has gone by and the stress builds up even more.  Sound familiar? What if we told that stretching alone would relieve stress? Well it’s true! Stretching exercises stimulate receptors in the nervous system that decrease the production of stress hormones. Stretching exercises also relax tight, tense muscles and increase blood flow. Practicing relaxation and stretching consistently will help with not only reducing, but will help other important health factors like regulating blood pressure and will also help with improving blood flow within the body.

The stretching exercises below will help you relax and reduce any tension that you may have in the muscle. These exercises are not only simple but you can do them anywhere and anytime, especially in those moments of high stress.  Remember to be proactive and stay consistent with a stress relieving stretch routine!  (More)

7 Items in Your Kitchen Waiting to Sabotage You

bwellfit | 26 July, 2010 10:44

Making a healthy plan is easy. It’s sticking to it that’s hard. So many things can throw you off guard. A bad day at work leaves you craving for some sweet and sour? A break up with a boyfriend drives you into the arms of another sweetie, Ben and Jerry? Feeling a little homesick forces you to have some of moms old fashion triple chocolaty cake?

Those cravings and feelings are hard to get rid of. However, there is a simple way to prevent yourself from giving into those cravings.  It’s as simple as out of sight, out of mind! If those items that aren’t in your reach, you are less likely to eat or even thinking about them. It may be hard to avoid them while out and about, but you do have control over your own home. Do not bring items into your house that are hazardous to your health.

The following are the top seven worst things to have in your home. Get rid of these and replace them with the better option and you will realize that it isn’t that hard to stay on the right track.

Frozen Foods

Making a meal from scratch is always the best option, but when work has your running home late you should still head home for a meal, not the drive thru.

Get rid of: Marie Callender’s Herb Roasted Chicken. This meal for one is loaded with 460 calories, 25 grams of fat and 1,030 mg of sodium!

Replace with: Stouffer’s Lean Cuisine Chicken Marsala. This meal only contains 140 calories, 4 grams of fat and 620 mg of sodium. If this dinner looks and feels like more of a snack, making a small salad or side dish while waiting for the microwave to beep can keep this meal healthy and satisfying.

Ask the Experts: Alcohol and Exercise

bwellfit | 21 July, 2010 06:43

Q: Help, summer fun and sun is ruining my bikini body?  I worked so hard to get into my swimsuit and I don’t want to lose my hard earned physique.  I always get talked into happy hours after work, not to mention the beach outings, pool parties and barbeques.  How do I make sure that all the extra alcohol doesn’t end up on my thighs?

A: Three ways that alcohol can ruin your bikini body are: dehydration, additional calories and lack of motivation.

     1. Alcohol ultimately will dehydrate you and you need water to build lean mass (muscle) which helps you burn fat.

     2.  There are also empty calories; some drinks contain as many calories as in whole meals.

     3. Getting motivated to work out or be active after a night of drinking is always tough and can cause yourskip it all together.

These three culprits are a recipe for bulge. We suggest drinking a glass of water for every drink you have, add an extra 30 minutes of cardio a week for every drink that you consume and try not to overdo the partying so that you can still get your workout in the next day.
